Brittany’s Story
Brittany Winkfield is a Denver native and director of Back2Basics and the Colorado Ethnic Media Exchange. With more than 20 years of experience in communications, she has built her career around storytelling, media strategy and community empowerment.
Her passion for publishing began in high school through internships at the Aurora Sentinel and 5280 Magazine. An HBCU graduate of Oakwood University in Alabama, she earned her degree in communications with a concentration in photo and print journalism and completed internships at VIBE Magazine and Upscale Magazine.
In 2013, Winkfield was named journalist of the year by the Colorado Association of Black Journalists. She founded Back2Basics Magazine in 2012, which has since evolved into a nonprofit that teaches youth basic life skills and entrepreneurship. She also leads 5280Vibe.com, a community-driven media and ticketing platform connecting audiences to Denver’s vibrant cultural scene.
Winkfield serves on the boards of the Colorado Association of Black Journalists, Colorado Press Association, Aurora Sentinel Newspaper and Urban League Young Professionals of Metro Denver. She is passionate about expanding media representation and creating opportunities for others to share their stories.
Outside of work, she enjoys good food, live music and traveling with her husband and three daughters.
